The kids and staff are excited about the "foreign exchange students" that are attending their school. We are excited to be able to teach a young generation about these beautiful animals, sustainable farming and biological control methods of invasive plants and weeds! Those are a lot of big words to learn for young kids!
They were crowding all around us and leaning into us to be petted and rubbed. Even the does who usually don't want to have anything to do with us were behaving this way. It seemed a bit odd to see this over affection they were displaying.
Prior to checking the does we checked the bucks and noticed that Romeo needed his hooves trimmed. Needless to say that when you trim his hooves you have to touch him and when you touch him his "essence" gets on you. Yes, the girls smelled the scent of Romeo. "O Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?" is what they were saying. Not to worry, they will get to see him and our other buck, The Hardy Boy in about a month. That will be too much to blog about!

It must have felt really good to get out in an open space and eat green forage after being in the barn all week showing off their handsome selves! They are such nice animals from good stock. The 4-H and FFA kids did a great job raising them to showcase their potential.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> The title of this blog post is appropriately named. If we had not gotten them they would not be running jumping and playing this morning. These children's hand raised goats would have been immediately snatched out of their cozy show pens and thrust into the harsh environment of large pens and trailers heading into the brutal and heartless Northeast industrial meat system. Unbelievably that was not the worst possible end result. One particular buyer in our area is actively buying 4H/FFA fair stock at high prices and they would be on their way to medical research programs focused on highly infectious diseases including leprosy research. More likely though is the medical program where these children's pet are partially blown up by the army in a controlled way in order to train medics how to stabilize severe trauma victims of IED and land mine injuries. With other options available, how could anyone choose to use young children's pets in that way?

With the very real threat of that being the outcome for the goats in this sale I am afraid we did have both a smart price and a also a "heart" price. Unfortunately for us the sale price was a lot closer to the heart price so we REALLY need to find at least one great forage job for them to earn some income to make it up.

It is true that most of our stock will one day die to become a very healthy meat product for informed consumers. Until that final moment though, all the Autumn Olive Farms goat's lives will be good days and filled with all the fascinating antics and details that make the goat uniquely what it is.

In fact, although we have one of the finest meat products that a human can eat we would gladly forgo the meat side of our business if we could afford to keep all of them as full time foragers. That would require us to become Boer Bok snowbirds to Florida! Know anyone in need of our services from November to May in a fine Florida setting?

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This past Saturday was Bea's turn at the spa. Bea is Mudflap's sister. She came to us last fall and she has never had anything done to her fur. We had to wait until warm weather to give her a new look.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">She is mostly Komondor with some Great Pyrenees mixed in. It is hard to tell from this picture, but Bea has what Clay calls "country dreadlocks." This is what the Komodors fur is supposed to do. The problem is that she is like a walking biohazard with those "stinking dreads." It is quite an unpleasant experience to ride in the car with her.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">It was so surprised when I shaved her. Under all of those nasty dreads was beautiful clean white fur! It came off in mostly one big piece like a rug. I could have just laid it in the chicken pen and the predators would have thought there was a dog lying in there. Instead I tore it apart and put the dreads all around the pen.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">You will be quite surprised to see the look that Bea went for. She wanted something different than Chloe. Something that was "South African".....
It is an Indian Curry dish using our Boer Bok meat. I will have to confess that I am not one that likes curry, but I wanted to eat our Boer Bok goat meat. Oh My, it was sooo delicious!! What I did not know is that there are different kinds of curry. Eric selected the perfect one to go with our Boer Bok! The entree also included grilled romaine with a raita sauce. Yes, I said grilled romaine. I had no idea that you could grill lettuce! It was incredible as well! I am so thankful that Clay has planted romaine in our organic garden. We are going to have fun with it. I also tried another new flavor which was fried yucca. It was a perfect complement to the Vindaloo!
They have decided to abandon Doug's house and use the nesting boxes. It is a much better choice and one that Clay can feel good about since he spent the time to build them such a nice "complex." The problem is that we have 6 nest "units" available and 5 hens want to use the same one. Boy I thought it was loud before. I had to close the door to carry on a phone conversation due the the squawking that was going on out there. You have never heard such fussing from a bunch of egg laying hens! It starts all over again once the egg is laid. For some reason they think the whole farm wants to know their business! Reminds me of some people I have known.
Unfortunately, our neighbor did not come out as well from the storm as we did. He came home to find that the South River had risen quickly, stranding his sheep on high ground where they were cut off by flood waters. The high ground went under as well so his 12 ewes and 11 lambs were up to their necks in water. Some were literally clinging to a fence with their front hooves and "body surfing" to keep their heads out of the water.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is a description of the magazine from the about us section of their website.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Good Taste is a glossy, highly visual, lifestyle magazine offering a fresh and entertaining look at food, wine, travel, luxury cars, art, interiors, books, etc.—in fact, all the good things that make life more interesting and exciting.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> The editorial staff of Good Taste subscribes to the concept of graphic journalism––writing that should look pleasing to read, even before you begin. The articles too are written by some of South Africa’s best writers, on topics that are aimed at the magazine’s affluent market.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I was reading along in the article and then I came to the 5th paragraph and was quite surprised! Click the link above to take a look at it.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I think it is a good article until you get to the last two paragraphs.

Doug in his "new house."

Yep, it is official Doug has been evicted from his house by a broody hen named Louise. He has, I kid you not, moved into a cardboard box! He is a true homeless cat! I saw him sleeping in the box that is sitting on top of the nice nesting boxes Clay built for the hens. Yes, Clay built them very nice accommodations, but they prefer Doug's house.

"Broody Louise"

It all started when we noticed Doug sitting at the back door even after he had been fed one night. We looked and sure enough Louise was "spending the night" in his house. That only meant one thing and that is she is now officially "sitting on her nest." I reached in to take a look to see how many eggs she was sitting on and she struck lightening fast. Thank goodness she missed. It was pinch and twist kind of peck! Donating blood and flesh was not worth seeing how many eggs she was sitting on. I decided to just leave her alone. Clay moved Doug's house up on the back porch so she would be safer. She is a "sitting hen not duck" for a fox or mink. We have both here on our farm. We have to push her house against the sliding glass doors at night so nothing can get her. During the day we turn her around so she can get some sun and fresh air. Ridiculous, I know!

I noticed that she had some eggs that were rolling out from under her. Clay said she needed a rounded nest shaped like a bowl. She had chosen to make her nest in Doug's bed and it was flat from him sleeping on it. I decided I had better fix her a proper nest. I put on heavy leather gloves and my thick winter jacket. I lifted the roof off the house and there she was like a coiled up snake ready to strike at any minute. I reached down and grabbed her and tucked her under my arm, so I would have free hands to work. I gathered the eggs that had rolled out and were cold. There were about 8 of those. That left 11 that were still warm. I lined the house with fresh hay and made a bowl nest for her and put the 11 eggs in it. I put her down and she quickly accessed the new nest and thought it was acceptable and climbed on. She looked much more comfortable than before. I am sure it was hard to try and set on all of those eggs on a somewhat flat surface.
I heard a racket out there one morning and discovered Thelma wanting to get on the nest. Louise said no way! What I did not realize is that Thelma had been going in there and laying her eggs. I donned on my protective gear and looked under Louise and now she is sitting on 19 eggs! Thelma lays her egg and then Louise rolls it up under herself.
By my calculations we should have chicks hatching at the end of the month. I will let you know how it goes. Last year a hawk flew into the pen and got the chicks! We will have to find a better place to keep them this year. One thing I have learned about chickens is that EVERYTHING wants to kill them! Doug hasn't so far, but that may change....
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Doug's problem all started when Thelma and Louise decided they wanted to fly out of their pen everyday and lay "their eggs" in a nest of "their choice." This is how they got their names "Thelma and Louise." <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Unfortunately for Doug, they decided that his house was an nice place to lay their eggs. Doug's house is located right by our back porch. As you can see it is nothing fancy, but it is a nice place for him to sleep and get out of the weather.

Doug's house. This picture was taken at 9:00 AM. Notice two eggs already in there!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">There are several problems with Thelma and Louise choosing Doug's house for their nest. One is that cats do not get up early. They like to sleep until mid morning. The hens pitch an absolute fit and wake up the whole farm until Doug leaves so they can lay their eggs. If they could talk it would go something like this "GET OUUUUUT, GET OUUUUUT!! My egg is coming and I HAVE TO COME IN! You know there is not room for the two of us and I would never lay my egg in the company of a cat! " Doug just looks at her and yawns and stretches his paws out and thinks about it. Meanwhile she is standing outside clucking and pitching a fit as LOUD as she can. Doug finally gives in and slowly climbs from his warm bed. He then sits at the back door and waits for his breakfast.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">There are also good things about them choosing Doug's house to lay their eggs. It is a convenient location for us to collect eggs right outside the back door. The top of the house opens up and we can easily collect the eggs. This is much better than the blue barrel where the rest of the hens lay their eggs. Of course they made their nest in the back of the barrel where it is hard to reach. We have to climb half way in to reach the eggs or use a stick to roll them out. Yes, I have stuffed the back of the barrel with hay to force them to make their nest where we can reach it. Does not work! They get in there and mash down the hay and make a cozy nest in the BACK of the barrel! Not very convenient, but it is nice to know where their nest is. Another good thing about Doug's house is that if we forget to collect the eggs and it is cold, then Doug lays on them and keeps them warm, so they don't end up freezing.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This story is about one day Doug seemed so sad, very tired and out of sorts. What could be wrong with him? He had been fed, so I knew he wasn't hungry. He did not look sick. Just tired. Then it occurred to me...

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I had been really busy and had not collected the eggs in a few days. Okay, it was about 5 days! I went out to look and sure enough there was a nest of 10 eggs! Doug had no where to lie in his own house except on top of them. He did not mind sleeping on a couple, but this was really pushing it! No wonder he looked so tired. He had not had a good nights sleep for days! This gives new meaning to "The Princess and The Pea!" I collected the eggs and he went in his house and enjoyed a nice nap that afternoon and a good nights sleep that night. I do make sure to collect the eggs every day now. I wonder what is going to happen if Thelma or Louise decides to get broody? I don't think Doug would volunteer to be a "midwife." Thelma and Louise have burned that bridge with their antics every morning!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
